 | Scout Football tournament 14/5/2006
After the promise of possibly two teams on Tuesday night, we had to scratch around for one in the end! Team was:
Christopher Johnston; Alan McCluskey; Jonathon Hughes; Craig Gilchrist;
Frank Sackey; Jacob Palmer; Andrew Sizer; Sam Waugh
The venue this year was Leamington FC and how good it was too, with decent goals, well marked pitch, superb playing surface and excellent organisation. Unfortunately(?) I was not allowed to huff and puff around with my whistle as we had PROPER referees! Team played really well (despite most of them having an early start from the Fox Coverts camp) progressing through the league section and semi-final into the final. Unfortunately this was against a team of 14+yr olds from Atherstone so again boys were muscled out of it. At full time it was 0-0 but two minutes into the 5 minutes extra time period a powerful shot eventually beat defenders and Craig in goal. No fault, just too powerful in the end. Like last year, the boys again scored ?moral? victory by playing the best football of the match despite the huge size and strength difference between the sides. The team was a credit to the troop for their attitude and sportsmanship throughout the whole day. To single anyone out as player of the tournament would be unfair on the others but Sam Waugh shaded it with excellent work rate, good defensive cover and the fact that (once he had worked out what the white sticks and net were at the end of the pitch) he scored most of our goals! They all deserve their ?sportsmans? badge!
A big thanks also to the parents of Jacob, Andrew and Sam for being great help on the day. We would not have participated without their involvement.
Doug Johnston
PS Maybe third time lucky, next year 20th May at same venue.
