Things You'll Need
2 squares of your choice of colored felt which will be used for the front and back of this pocketbook.
1 square of a different colored felt which will be used for the handle.
Pencil
tracing paper
scissors
straight pins
embroidery needle
6 strand embroidery floss(7 colors) and tape.

1 Decide if you are doing this project by hand embroidery or by machine embroidery. If you are doing this project by hand, tape a piece of tracing paper over any picture you would like to embroider on the front of this pocketbook. Trace all the designs you would like on it. After tracing take a soft lead pencil and vigorously rub it over the back of the tracing paper. Pin the paper, penciled side down, over the felt pocketbook square. Trace over the lines on the paper. Remove paper. The black lines on the felt are the designs that you will be embroidering. If you are using an embroidery machine choose the designs you would like then embroider them on one of the square felt blocks and proceed to step number three.

2 Start with a satin stitch: Starting from the wrong side of the felt, bring the embroidery needle up at one edge of a design to be embroidered. Now insert the needle at the opposite edge, and return to the starting edge by carrying the thread underneath the felt. Make stitches parallel and close together. Next we want to use a running stitch: Insert the needle in and out of the felt, making even stitches.

3 Embroider all the designs. Then, take your scissors and cut all around the outer edges of the pocketbook. This is the front. Pin it to the other square of pocketbook felt, cut around it, and you will have the back.

4 Pin the front and back together. Using the running stitch, sew around the outline of the pocketbook leaving scalloped edge open.

5 Trace out a handle that will fit onto the the top of the pocketbook. Pin tracing to your remaining square of felt and cut out the handle. Place the handle inside the top of your two pocketbook pieces and fasten with a few stitches.

Embroidery is used mostly to decorate all types of textiles and fabric sheets, pillowcases, home linens, handkerchiefs, tableclothes, t-shirts, caps and hats, bags and purses basically any type of garment. It consists mainly of decorations made with embroidery silk threads which can be in one color or multicolored. Embroidery used to be and still is sometimes today done by hand with a needle and one or several thicker type wool like threads and takes a long time to do and is considered a work of art. In the old days embroidery done by hand was very valued and expensive to buy. Today you can still do embroidery by hand but being an advanced world we can now use an embroidery machine which will give perfect results every time. Now embroidery has become a hobby of for many people and is no longer taught in schools. Now that machines have made embroidery much more easier to do a lot of clothing is now embroidered also bed linens and tableclothes can be bought at very reasonable and affordable prices and ar no longer in the priveledged class. If you are interested in taking up hand embroidery as a new hobby you can buy lots of hand embroidery kits from craft stores and you just need to learn basic stitches as the embroidery designs are printed on the cloths and are usually printed with the outline in an ink that disolves when washed. It is a very relaxing past time hobby for everyone. You can even start your own business or make pretty gifts for friends and family. Embroidery has been around for thousands of years and generally it is used to embellish or decorate fabric, garments and furnishings. Hand embroidery uses a needle and thread to work fancy stitches on the suface of garments or cloth material you can use any type of thread but when using a heavy yarn thread this is called crewl embroidery. Embroidery has traditionally been a way to decorate many types of traditional costumes, home linens and garment trimmings. There are many styles of embroidery practiced throughout the world some samples were popular pieces made by school girls in the United States around the 1800's to demonstrate their skills at needlework. Modern machine embroidery is used for caps, tshirts, sweatshirts, jackets patches for company logos or sayings and even fancy designs. There are many types of embroidery machines on the market available to hobbyists these machines use computer programs to create designs and embroidery patches.

In the 60's you could buy a Singer with the cams that did fancy embroidery stitches and also the Kenmore had cams too these 1960's machines did not do machine embroideries in the hoop like today. Singer had attachments that wnt inside a cam that embroidered decorations on clothing in the sixties. In the seventies or early eighties there was a hand held battery operated punch for ebroidery which was used for home use. We now use the robatic hopped home machines. Janome was introduced in 1994 that embroidered in a 4 x 4 inch hoop. I do recall that in the 80's IBM had the 86 PC too. Just a little bit of vintage embroidery history.

Comments(0) Post Comment Email to friend

What greater pleasure is there than presenting an embroidered gift to a friend of family member, or to embroider a special gift for a child and see the delighted look when they receive something that no one else has, or can get.
We all like unique gifts. We love to receive something that is an original, designed with us in mind.

Using our embroidery talents to do something more than just decorate our already overburdened walls is possible if we are creative in our thinking and diligent in finding just the right embroidery pattern to use for the article we have in mind.

Machine embroidery is useful incredibly intricate and beautiful as well as relatively quick to produce. Machine embroidery patterns are readily available from the internet today and you can also download punch needle embroidery patterns on multiple sites.

A perfect thank you to someone might be an embroidered wine bag, completed by the purchase of a bottle of their favorite wine. To thank a host for your visit, one idea might be a basket, laden with pretty guest soaps and completed by the addition of fingertip towels that you have created with an embroidery design in the colors of their home.
Gifts such as these say,” I was thinking about what you might like”. A unique embroidery pattern will help you to combine thoughtfulness with creativity to make the perfect gift idea.

There are many embroidery designs which are specifically designed with a child in mind.
A set of finger puppets which bring fairy tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk, or Little Red Riding Hood creatively to life will bring a smile to a little ones face. Another idea might be to mix and match the fairy tale characters so that an entire set of them could be used to do childrens story time.
Sending a child to school with an embroidered cardigan for warmth or the neck of their turtle neck emblazoned with their school logo will be sure to please them, and may gather requests from other school mates as well.
A unique and novel idea for a wedding party might be embroidered place cards for the wedding parties table or a wedding sampler which details the dates, times and those who stood up for them at the wedding.
A newly made housewife would enjoy the pattern from her china made into an embroidery pattern for her tea towels or potholders.

You can download embroidery patterns, to design your own machine embroidery patterns or hand embroidery patterns to make your gift giving unique.
There are also many pattern maker softwares which will help you to create the perfect embroidery design from a picture or other scanned material that may also inspire new ideas for gifts.

Embroidery designs which are downloaded or created can help you to make the perfect gift for nearly any friend or family member. To proffer something which is unique, unable to be found anywhere else, and which you took the time and energy to create with them in mind is exactly the right gift no matter what the reason for giving it.
